Do follow all procedures needed to install ubuntu such as back up data and should have empty space or unallocated space to install ubuntu.
The Following Method SHow You To Install(Dual Boot) Ubuntu,If it is not showing you the partitions ie only showing whole hard disk as free space.
1.Boot your ubuntu live cd or usb.
2.Click on try ubuntu without installation.
3.Now Open terminal and type sudo fixparts /sda/dev. Press Enter.
4.Then type ? for help
5.Now it shows you the commands,press p to print the partition table.
6.You will see the all partions now.IF it shows the all partitions then press w to write the partitions.Press enter.
7.Once the partions are wrote go to install ubuntu.
8.Choose the something else option.
9.There you will see your partitions.as
10.Click on free storage space and make a partition known as root (/)
11.GIve space accordingly to this partition.
12.Make another partition for swap area,give space to it.
13.install ubuntu in the root partition.
14.Finish installation and reboot.
Now if after rebooting it show the dual boot option its fine if it boot directly to ubuntu then boot from windows8 live cd and click on advanced options then open command prompt type following commands in command prompt
1.bootrec /fixmbr then enter
2.bootrec /fixboot press enter
3.bootrec /scanos enter
4.bootrec /rebuildbcd press enter if it further asks press y nad enter done.
5.Reboot
NOW if it shows only windows or boot into windows then go to ubuntu by live cd oen terminal then type following commands
1.sudo mount /dev/sda5/mnt
sda5 is location where ubuntu is installed it may be different on your computer.so find.
2.sudo grub-install /dev/sda –root-directory=/mnt
This install grub
Now type sudo update-grub
Reboot Finished.NOw you will see both the options.
This works 100% i also have the same problem and now i have dual boot options.I strongly recommend to back up data.
